Why does your vagina burn?

Burning sensations inside or around the vagina is a very common female sexual health problem. There can be multiple reasons behind vaginal burning such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), menopause, irritation, etc. Symptoms and treatment of vaginal burning depend on what causes it. In this article, we are going to explore the reasons due to which your vagina burns. The common most causes of vaginal burning may include:

Menopause

After menopause, women frequently experience vaginal burning due to changes in the levels of hormones. After menopause, you may experience burning in the vagina very often during sexual intercourse.

Irritation in the vaginal area

Vaginal burning can be the result of irritation in the vaginal area. Your vagina may get easily irritated due to contact with certain things. These things can include scented soaps, detergents, bubble baths, perfumes, feminine hygiene sprays, fabrics, douches, spermicides, latex condoms, medications, and even semen. All these things can cause itching, stinging and severe burning in your vagina.

Urinary tract infection (UTI)

The urinary tract can easily get infections, including the urethra, bladder, and kidneys. Women who have UTI will feel extreme stinging and burning in the vagina especially during urinating and sexual intercourse.

Yeast infection

Yeast infection in the vagina causes a constant feeling of burning. Yeast infection is commonly known as vaginal thrush. If you have a yeast infection, you are most likely to experience vaginal burning while having sex or peeing.

Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is a significant cause of vaginal burning. Bacterial vaginosis is a condition in which bad bacteria in the vagina are found in abundance, affecting the pH balance.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. One of the symptoms of chlamydia is the sensation of burning in the vagina. It causes burning especially during urinating or sex.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This bacteria is spread through sexual contact and it infects the mucous membranes inside the cervix, fallopian tubes, and the uterus. Burning in the vagina is a symptom of gonorrhea.

Genital herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by the spread of the herpes virus through sexual contact. Once this virus gets into your body, it will exist throughout your life but it may or may not be active. If it is active, it can cause a burning sensation in the vagina.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STD) in the United States which is caused by a parasite that passes to a person through sexual contact. The most prevalent symptom of trichomoniasis is a burning sensation in the vagina.
